AI-enhanced malicious attacks are a new top emerging risk for enterprises: Gartner

May 23, 20241 Min Read
five cubes illustrate the concept of five emerging risks.

A Gartner survey of 345 senior enterprise risk executives has generated a list of the top five global emerging risks. AI-enhanced malicious attacks are the top concern followed by AI-assisted misinformation. These are explored by Gartner in its Q24 Emerging Risks Report, which considers 20 emerging risks in total.

While the top two risks are AI-based the next two are linked to political risk, being ‘escalating political polarization’ and ‘globally consequential elections’.

Rounding out the top five is an emerging business risk, ‘misaligned organizational talent profile’.

Regional differences

There are regional differences in respondents’ views on the emerging risks.

In the United States the top five are seen as:

  1. AI-enhanced malicious attacks
  2. AI-assisted misinformation
  3. Escalating political polarization
  4. Globally consequential elections
  5. Personal data regulatory fragmentation.

In the UK they are:

  1. AI-enhanced malicious attacks
  2. Widening Middle East conflict
  3. Globally consequential elections
  4. Escalating political polarization
  5. AI-assisted misinformation.

And in Australia / New Zealand they are:

  1. AI-enhanced malicious attacks
  2. AI-assisted misinformation
  3. Personal data regulatory fragmentation
  4. Misaligned organizational talent profile
  5. Overzealous cost cutting.
