UK and France to partner on making GPS systems more resilient

GPS-based positioning, navigation, and timing systems are critical for many business systems, and the Ukraine war has shown how these systems can be targeted by malign actors.

In an agreement made between the two national governments, UK and French researchers will work in partnership to develop ways to shield critical infrastructure with more resilient navigation and timing systems from attacks and signal jamming.

The UK’s Science and Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, used a joint visit to Imperial College London, with French President Macron, to set out how this sort of collaboration makes both the UK and France stronger and safer.

“France and the UK both have huge ambitions for technology to boost economic growth and strengthen national security. It is vital we work with natural partners like our French neighbours in these endeavours, particularly as the threats from hostile state actors only grow. Today we build on the Entente Cordiale with an Entente Technologique, celebrating and renewing our longstanding and historic partnership so that together we can face down the challenges of tomorrow,” said Mr Kyle.
