Many organizations are concerned that data is spiralling out of control

November 28, 20232 Mins Read

New research from Cloudera has found that compliance is the main concern for 79% of IT decision makers (ITDMs) when it comes to managing data; and two-thirds (66%) are worried that data is spiralling out of control in their organization.

The survey of 850 ITDMs across EMEA reveals that almost two thirds (63%) of organizations believe that siloed data makes it harder for them to comply with data compliance regulations. Many organizations have deployed multiple point solutions to help manage data throughout its lifecycle. However, this is driving up complexity, with 79% of ITDMs saying that integrating point solutions for data analytics and management has made compliance more challenging.

With data continuing to scale, compliance remains a significant challenge for many organizations. Emerging innovations like AI will add further complexity, and with new regulations on the horizon, remaining compliant will only become more difficult. Organizations must start to think of data as a product and protect their greatest asset by ensuring that compliance is always-on and everywhere.

Chris Royles, EMEA Field CTO at Cloudera

More than three-quarters (78%) of ITDMs believe that integrating point solutions for data analytics and management have driven up the cost of data. Almost all (99%) agree that integrating the different point solutions required for managing data across its lifecycle is a challenge, with a third (34%) finding it a ‘significant challenge’. This is leading to organizations spending more than a quarter (28%) of their annual IT budget on managing data across its lifecycle.

Research methodology

Conducted by Coleman Parkes Research, Cloudera’s survey evaluated the opinions of 850 IT decision makers with responsibility for data analytics and tooling in their organization across the EMEA region: UK (200), France (200), Germany (200), Spain (100), Italy (100), Middle East (50). Respondents came from organizations with more than 1,000 employees within the following industries: finance, banking, insurance, manufacturing, telecommunications, retail and e-commerce, healthcare and life sciences, government and public sector, technology and software, energy and utilities. The research was conducted between March and April 2023.
