The draft update of the ISO 22316 Security and resilience — Organizational resilience — Guidelines international standard has now been released for review. This represents a significant evolution of the original ISO 22316:2017, which focused on principles and attributes for enhancing organizational resilience.
The updated draft reflects nearly a decade of practical experience, regulatory development, and maturity in resilience thinking. It places greater emphasis on governance, strategy, and the ability of organizations to demonstrate resilience in practice, not just intent.
The formal review and voting period for the draft closes on 26 March 2026. Organizations, practitioners, and interested parties can comment on the proposed changes before the standard is finalized by contacting their national member of the ISO technical committee.
Key changes in the draft ISO 22316 include:
- Introduction of a measurement-based framework for organizational resilience
- A new focus on resilience by design, embedded into strategy and business models
- Definition of essential outcomes, supported by indicators, targets, and thresholds
- Explicit use of stress testing to validate resilience under severe conditions
- Clearer board and top management governance responsibilities
- Expansion of resilience across defined dimensions, including financial, operational, workforce, environmental, and societal resilience.
The updated standard marks a shift from descriptive guidance to a more structured, outcomes-focused approach to organizational resilience.
